Statement Regarding Fluvanna County Volunteer Fire Department, Inc EMS License

Fluvanna County Administration is aware that there is concern and speculation regarding reports that Fluvanna County Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., (Fluvanna Fire), which includes Palmyra Company 1, Fork Union Company 2 and Kents Store Company 3, had its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) license temporarily revoked. Fluvanna Fire is an independent corporation that receives funding and support from the County of Fluvanna and is governed by its own policies and bylaws.

First and foremost, the County would like to reassure residents that its ability to respond to EMS calls remains intact. The County EMS system is a combined system of career and volunteer EMS first responders. Fluvanna County Department of Emergency Services career staff provide 24-hour/7-day a week coverage, staffing three ambulances; located in Palmyra, Kents Store, and Fork Union, as well as a medic-level Quick Response Vehicle (QRV). In addition, Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc. provides at minimum an additional 24-hour/7-day a week ambulance, staffed by certified and trained volunteers. In the event that all four ambulances and the QRV are responding to calls, the County will request Mutual Aid from our neighboring counties. 

Fluvanna Fire volunteers provide supplemental assistance to the County EMS system under a license issued by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) that is under the direction of an Operational Medical Director (OMD.) On September 11, 2026, the OMD for Fluvanna Fire temporarily removed his authorization for Fluvanna Fire to practice EMS in the County. This action affects all three fire companies under Fluvanna Fire. This does not impact Fluvanna Fire’s ability to respond to fires or other emergencies. Fluvanna Fire will work with the OMD on a plan to reinstate his authorization to practice EMS.
